01 — Origin
Fabric covered shutters were designed originally to solve a problem window when working alongside the designer Mr. Dudley Poplak. Since then they have become the answer to that constantly recurring question — what to do with a dormer window.
Curtains always look cluttered and block the light. Blinds and plantation shutters are chic but minimalistic. Katie Rapp, interior designer since 1994, battled with this very problem. Her solution is the fabric-covered shutter.

02 — Construction
Each panel is constructed using ultra-light fibreboard selected to resist warping. All fittings are glued and screwed into place — the originals have been in-situ for over six years.
The upholstery method has been honed and updated three times. The result is a fabulously neat, precise finish. No braid is needed along the edges to cover unsightly staples.
03 — Fabric as Art
Our shutters display fabric flat — like a piece of artwork — resulting in added visual value from an expensive fabric. Whether open or closed, patterned fabric viewed flat simply looks great.
A unique aspect is the precise pattern matching across panels. The transformative reveal when closing the shutters always requires a look back as you walk away.
It's all in the pattern matching
04 — Two Fabrics
Using two fabrics brings a new dimension. Despite the added cost of manufacture you can sometimes save a good amount on an expensive main fabric — the reverse side needn't be the same.
Which fabric faces into the room depends on the panel configuration. Sometimes this works perfectly in your favour. Give us a call and we'll explain how it will work with your layout.
05 — Your Fabric
It's your choice entirely. You supply the fabric — and if we can source it, you receive a discount equivalent to 15% of the fabric cost.
It's important to choose the right fabric. Overly thick or thin materials can be problematic. Always send us a sample before buying. We are always happy to help you choose.
06 — Costs
A lot of time goes into their creation — from our initial visit, to placing the fabric and upholstering the panels, through to fitting. As panel size is not proportional to the time required, medium to larger windows are definitely more cost effective.

07 — Measure & Fit
There was a time when we offered a mail order service. It became immediately apparent that the only way to be aware of the pitfalls when measuring and fitting was by making mistakes. For a couple of customers this proved very expensive.
We made a decision: we only measure and fit the shutters ourselves. Two visits — one to measure, one to fit. Current lead time is 8–10 weeks.
08 — Reach
Most of our work is in and around London. We also travel throughout England, Scotland and France, and supply to the USA.
Underpinned by Katie Rapp Design Consultants, established 1993 — with accounts at many of the most prestigious fabric houses in the UK, Europe and America.
Always feel free to ask if you are further afield — we like an adventure.
